A charity, legals and events

We have some very good news! We haven’t signed the lease for the Hall yet (although this will be happening soon), but we are delighted to announce that the Trust is now a registered charity! (registration number 1146677). Thank you very much to everyone who got us this far, and most specially to CADVAS (www.cadvas.org).

After years of underinvestment the Westgate Hall needs love.  The capital sum provided by Curzon Cinemas will indeed make the building weatherproof.   However additional funds will allow the building to reach its potential as Canterbury’s ‘village hall.’   The better the condition of the building when it re-opens under Trust management, the better its chances of being a successful venue.  Currently, our focus is fund raising to cover the professional fees and services associated with preparing our planning application.

So please help. Join the Trust as members, donate if you can, and volunteer (everything helps, from taking up a regular role, to one offs).

And with fundraising being so crucial at the moment, we are delighted to announce three very different events in the next few weeks.  What better way to appreciate the huge variety of people who want to help secure the Hall for Canterbury:

And we are thrilled to announce that one half of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012 “Best Duo”, Brendan Power, is a member of the Trust and so:

12th May: Tim Edey & Brendan Power at the Westgate Hall!
Guitarist/Box player extraordinaire TIM EDEY and Harmonica guru BRENDAN POWER are two of the most exciting & original musicians on the contemporary acoustic scene. Celtic-Blues based but mixing genres with impunity, they defy boundaries & excel at improvisation, making every gig a seat-of-the-pants ride for them and the audience. They won “Best Duo” at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards 2012. http://www.edeyandpower.com/

This concert will help raise funds for the refurbishment of the Westgate Hall.

Doors open at 7, concert starts at 8.

Tickets will be £10.19 in advance (including booking fee) or £12 at the door. Limited numbers, book soon! You can book online via http://timedeyandbrendanpower.eventbrite.co.uk/

There will be food cooked by Rafa Lopez (the Goods Shed restaurant), watch this space for the menu!

Licensed bar.

And finally, a great video of the Bring and Fix event we did at the Hall back in February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEW2e2miXgs&feature=colike done by a Trust volunteer. We’re looking forward to repeating this great day and getting a Time Bank going as soon as we are running the Hall.

Kind regards and a very happy Easter to you all!
