Music Brings the World to Westgate Hall
May 17, 2012 at 9:25 am | Posted in News | Leave a commentWhen a home crowd of over 200 joined local folk heroes, Brendan Power and Tim Edey, last Saturday at the Westgate Hall in celebrating their national success at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards, the toe-tapping, clapping and all round good humour justified every moment of the Trust’s two-year effort to save the 100-year-old building for the community. It was one of those moments when words just don’t cut it.
Brendan and Tim decided to share their joy with their East Kent base. And Brendan as a Canterbury resident and Trust member believed the Westgate Hall would be the perfect venue. This vote of confidence, combined with the duo’s significant efforts in publicizing the evening, brought folk not only from Canterbury, but Margate, Faversham and London. They couldn’t believe the size or the flexibility of the space. Candlelit tables decorated with sprigs of rosemary, fresh inventive flavours served by The Farmhouse pop up restaurant, the magic of world class performers all combined in a unique setting resulted in cries for ‘More!’
Local guitar builder, player and singer, Alister Atkin, set the theme of local goes global when he opened the evening with fellow musicians Russell Grooms on keys and Lee Cornwall on cajón.
Brendan and Tim played off their local colour and fun. With Brendan on harmonica, his sound switching between gravelly, soaring, lamenting, and Tim on guitar or melodeon/accordion, their bodies leaning and swaying towards each other with the rhythms and harmonies, instruments conversing, we travelled on winds and tides from Whitstable’s Old Neptune and lobsters, to the Celtic heritage of Ireland, across heather fields to a love affair with Sat Nav, Bulgaria, the Baltic, Duke Ellington and swing. Almost 100 years ago, the Hall had sent soldiers over the seas to war. Now, Brendan and Tim went over the seas with music, except they came back and created something new.
What a joy the evening will be immortalised in a DVD available on Tim and Brendan’s website. Not only will it bring back happy memories to all who took part, it will vindicate the Council’s decision to grant the Westgate Community Trust a 99-year lease for the Westgate Hall.
The three-way negotiations – Council, Trust, Curzon Cinemas – are drawing to a close. Caution has been the guide and resulted in rather slower progress than hoped for, however, given the economic climate, slow and steady is maybe the preferred way to work.
Funds raised during the evening have been dedicated to the Hall Refurbishment Fund.
PS: We have some wonderful photos and will be uploading them as soon as possible!
May: volunteers, folk stars, boot fair, young enterpreneurs and quiz+paella!

We are very, very close to signing the agreement for lease. And, in the meantime, we keep working hard to raise funds towards the refurbishment of the Hall and the “takeover” costs.
We would like to invite all of you who would be interested in volunteering for the Trust (or are already volunteering) to come to a meeting at the Westgate Hall on the 10th of May at 8pm (West room, ground floor to the left of the bar).
Some of you may have seen that the Westgate Hall and our efforts to save it were mentioned recently on BBC1 Southeast today by Tim Edey and Brendan Power, in case you missed it, here is the link (intro at the top of prog, then 19mins in and a perfectly timed play out): http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b01gk63k/South_East_Today_25_04_2012/
And this is why:

Salsa, vintage game consoles and more: a busy fundraising weekend!
April 20, 2012 at 10:01 am | Posted in News | Comments OffTags: Boot fair, Canterbury, consoles, old computers, party, retro games, salsa, salsa lessons, vintage clothing
We have a very exciting and busy weekend ahead, raising funds for the refurbishment of the Hall. We are close to signing the lease and being able to start the works!
Tomorrow night (Saturday 21st!) the lovely people of Salsa-Asi (who started the campaign to Save Westgate Hall) are hosting a Salsa Party Night fundraiser.
There will be classes for all levels, including: Intermediate/Advanced with Leon, Improvers with Simon Green, Beginners with Matt and Colleen and Beginners Plus with Bob. Doors open at 7.30 and classes start at 8pm, then Freestyle until midnight. Tickets are £10 and can be bought at the door.
And on Sunday we are holding our third Westgate Hall Indoor Boot Fair, from 11 to 3. There will be 65 stalls selling all sorts of treasure and giving old things a new life. This time there will be plenty of great food on offer including curry, cakes and Italian baked goods from Enzo’s Bakery.
The incredibly cute felted creatures handmade by Emily from Felted Thoughts will be there looking for a new home, and we hear that we’ll have great vintage clothes not least from http://www.sharewhatwewear.com/. For anyone who is into retro consoles, computers and games, we have been promised a fantastic selection, including (in Steve Coombs own words): “All being well, people will be able to have a go on one or two of them as well – anyone for Mario Kart on the N64?”.
And at 12 we’ll be celebrating that Maurice, who we think is our oldest volunteer (we don’t know everyboys’s age!) has turned 98! Come along to wish him happy birthday!
Easter beginnings – a charity & those who make it happen!
April 13, 2012 at 9:46 am | Posted in News | Comments OffTags: acoustic, celtic blues, folk, volunteer
We’ve achieved it! The Trust is no longer just a company limited by guarantee; it’s now also a registered charity:
WESTGATE COMMUNITY TRUST (CANTERBURY) LTD., registered number 1146677!
That we’ve come so far is thanks to a fantastic team effort by our volunteer Trust members and the invaluable guidance of CaDVAS (Canterbury District Voluntary Action and Support) whose experts have supported us through so much of the last two years. And without the backing of our community, none of this would have happened! So congratulations to everyone for acting on what they believe in and sticking with it!
Becoming a charity could not have come at a better moment. These last weeks, the three legal teams (Council, Trust, Curzon) have worked hard on harmonizing language and concepts with the result that the lease is virtually ready for a final read through.
And as a charity, we can now spread our funding wings. After years of underinvestment the Westgate Hall needs love. The capital sum provided by Curzon Cinemas will indeed make the building weatherproof. However additional funds will allow the building to reach its potential as Canterbury’s ‘village hall’, and the Trust to put in place the programmes that interest our community.
Currently, we are raising funds to cover the fees associated with compiling the planning application the Trust will submit on signature of the lease. Professional services required range from providing drainage surveys to surveyors’ reports.
How can you help? Consider joining the Trust, coming to our events, volunteering , making donations, encouraging others to take part.
Volunteers are our backbone. Maurice Mason, the doyen of our volunteer team, has just celebrated his 98th birthday! A horticulturalist, he directed Hadlow College in Canterbury for decades. A member of the Trust since early 2010, he has been instrumental in recruiting members, and in urging us on when spirits flagged. Do please join us at noon on Sunday, 22nd April at our Indoor Boot Fair, to take part in expressing our appreciation! Maurice will be selling plants.
Then on Saturday, 12th May, Trust member and international acoustic star, Brendan Power, together with his music partner, Tim Edey, from Broadstairs, will hold a fundraising concert at the Hall. This will be their first Kent show since winning ‘Best Duo’ at the 2012 BBC Radio Two Folk Awards. While their sound is based in Celtic Blues, they mix genres. An added bonus at the concert: they will be launching their new DVD. Tickets (£9 in advance, £12 at the door) can be booked at http://timedeyandbrendanpower.eventbrite.co.uk/ Please spread the word!
So the jigsaw pieces are on the verge of slotting together – the people, the organisation, the planning, and the building.
In the meantime, we’re inspired by Maurice Mason’s rule for living:
‘You have to keep going; you have to keep busy!’
A charity, legals and events
April 2, 2012 at 9:52 pm | Posted in News | Comments OffTags: charity, community, entertainment, folk, salsa
We have some very good news! We haven’t signed the lease for the Hall yet (although this will be happening soon), but we are delighted to announce that the Trust is now a registered charity! (registration number 1146677). Thank you very much to everyone who got us this far, and most specially to CADVAS (www.cadvas.org).
After years of underinvestment the Westgate Hall needs love. The capital sum provided by Curzon Cinemas will indeed make the building weatherproof. However additional funds will allow the building to reach its potential as Canterbury’s ‘village hall.’ The better the condition of the building when it re-opens under Trust management, the better its chances of being a successful venue. Currently, our focus is fund raising to cover the professional fees and services associated with preparing our planning application.
So please help. Join the Trust as members, donate if you can, and volunteer (everything helps, from taking up a regular role, to one offs).
And with fundraising being so crucial at the moment, we are delighted to announce three very different events in the next few weeks. What better way to appreciate the huge variety of people who want to help secure the Hall for Canterbury:
21st April: Salsa Party Night, Westgate Hall from 7.30pm (classes 8.00 sharp)
Classes for all levels with the Salsa-Asi Team including COMPLETE BEGINNERS. Intermediate/Advanced class with Leon from Salsa South!
Freestyle Dancing until midnight & a prize draw raffle!
Entry: £10
Tickets available from Steve Wells, tel. 07825.300590; email: steve.wells7@btinternet.com or Salsa-Asi Thursday Club nights.
22nd April: Boot Fair (11 to 3)
Back due to overwhelming demand!
Helping you de-clutter and giving old things a new life.
Tables are £5
Refreshments and children’s entertainment.
Helping raise funds to refurbish the Westgate Hall.
Limited number of tables, book soon to avoid disappointment, by calling Chris on 01227.712355 or email: christinecayley@tiscali.co.uk
And we are thrilled to announce that one half of the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2012 “Best Duo”, Brendan Power, is a member of the Trust and so:
12th May: Tim Edey & Brendan Power at the Westgate Hall!
Guitarist/Box player extraordinaire TIM EDEY and Harmonica guru BRENDAN POWER are two of the most exciting & original musicians on the contemporary acoustic scene. Celtic-Blues based but mixing genres with impunity, they defy boundaries & excel at improvisation, making every gig a seat-of-the-pants ride for them and the audience. They won “Best Duo” at the BBC Radio Two Folk Awards 2012. http://www.edeyandpower.com/
This concert will help raise funds for the refurbishment of the Westgate Hall.
Doors open at 7, concert starts at 8.
Tickets will be £10.19 in advance (including booking fee) or £12 at the door. Limited numbers, book soon! You can book online via http://timedeyandbrendanpower.eventbrite.co.uk/
There will be food cooked by Rafa Lopez (the Goods Shed restaurant), watch this space for the menu!
Licensed bar.
And finally, a great video of the Bring and Fix event we did at the Hall back in February http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xEW2e2miXgs&feature=colike done by a Trust volunteer. We’re looking forward to repeating this great day and getting a Time Bank going as soon as we are running the Hall.
Kind regards and a very happy Easter to you all!
Indoor Boot Fair — recycling wins the day!
March 23, 2012 at 7:25 pm | Posted in News | Comments OffCome and join us this Sunday, 25th March, for our second indoor boot fair at the Westgate Hall from 11 am to 3 pm.
The response to our first fair at the end of January was so supportive, and there were so many requests for a repeat, that here we are.
Just like last time, over 60 tables are booked ready for bargain hunters. Trust children were so excited by their finds last time, that they have been saving their pocket money in anticipation. Maybe there’ll be another beautiful Lego boat?
Maurice Mason, the doyen of our volunteers who will be celebrating his 97th birthday on 31st March, will once again be running his plant stall and donating all the profits to the Trust. At our last fair, his wonderful colourful table raised £50.
Catching Lives, our local independent charity that aims to catch the lives of homeless vulnerably housed people in our city, will also have an information stall about the work it does to help end the harm and damage caused to individuals, families and the community by homeless rough sleeping and insecure housing. Maybe you’d be interested in volunteering, donating or spreading the word.
And then as part of the Trust’s support of independent local business people, Emily from Felted Thoughts will have a stall selling quirky needle felted gifts and accessories while High Waisted Hotpants and Bell Bottom Jeans will be selling their vintage clothing and classic retro goods.
Even if you don’t find anything to buy, come and meet up with your friends and neighbours while drinking a cup of Trust tea or coffee, and maybe eating a slice of cake? Or maybe you’d like to have some fun volunteering with us? If so, do contact us via the Trust’s email.
Here are some of the tasks you could help us with: moving tables, setting up the tea and coffee stall, helping clear out between 3 and 4pm, reading stories to children, running the Trust’s table, and any general assistance.
If you have any good quality items that could be sold to raise funds for the Trust please do bring them to the Trust table. The only condition: if your item doesn’t sell, please take it home and save it for next time! Many thanks!
Last time we raised £500 for our Hall Refurbishment Fund which was wonderful! Let’s see if we can do as well, if not better this Sunday. Every penny and pound helps and is the community’s contribution to creating our village hall.
The next fair is already booked for Sunday, 22nd April, the last before the Hall’s refurbishment. It looks like this will become a regular Trust event.
Cheese, Charcuterie and Hop Adventure
March 6, 2012 at 7:14 am | Posted in News | Comments OffDo join us on Sunday, 11th March, from 7 to 9pm, at the Goods Shed on an adventure that will bring together the best cheeses, hams and beer Canterbury has to offer while also supporting the Refurbishment Fund for the Westgate Hall.
Cheesemakers of Canterbury will present us handmade British cheeses, many of them produced locally, almost all of them unpasteurised. (There can be up to 40 cheeses on offer on any day at the Goods Shed!) And Patriana Charcuterie will complement these with samplings of hams and sausage supplied directly from independent French and Spanish producers.
And then there is the beer.
“There’s so much more to beer than what’s available in the average pub. Beers that can be shared by couples, beers for the connoisseur and a fantastic range of artisan lagers that will befriend the most loyal fizzy-beer drinker,” is how beer enthusiast, Andrew Morgan, describes what The Bottle Shop has to offer. He believes it’s time for us to have access to a comprehensive range of award winning beers and experimental brews from around the world. His Bottle Shop in fact offers the largest number of British bottled beers in the South East of England – including London.
So, have fun stimulating your palette with these delicious cheeses, charcuterie and hop blends.
Huge thanks to Cheesemakers of Canterbury, Patriana Charcuterie and The Bottle Shop for their support for the Westgate Hall and its future as Canterbury’s community centre.
Tickets are £15 and can be purchased through this website: http://westgate-beer-night.eventbrite.co.uk/?ebtv=C
Bring and Fix — Can help really be free?
March 1, 2012 at 6:43 am | Posted in News | Comments OffThe Trust’s first Bring and Fix event last Sunday at the Westgate Hall showed Canterbury is full of people who want to be active in our community.
Our volunteers, with ages ranging from eight to 96, were willing to try a new concept: helping others by sharing skills and knowledge for free.
It was also a voyage of discovery for all who brought things ‘to be fixed.’ Several people who came to explore couldn’t quite believe anyone would repair something for free. When they saw what was happening, several wished they had brought their guitar, while another went home to fetch trousers which needed buttons sewn on and hemming.
Here’s some of what was fixed: a clarinet, clocks, teddies, jumpers, shirts, satchels, guitars, bike punctures, fuses in plugs replaced.
And knowledge shared: how to print emails, use baby slings, questions surrounding giving birth, bubble writing, how to generate electricity by cycling, allotment organisation and cultivation, financial planning, what it is to be an Odd Fellow, architectural and building advice, energy saving and green building, how to circle drum, career advice, how to jazz up and improve a CV, curry making, how to play chess.
We were particularly pleased that students from our local universities could join us in this adventure. A pop-up gallery organised by students from the University for the Creative Arts to teach how to make wood burning pictures was so successful that they ran out of wood. And students from the University of Kent inspired children to learn circus skills using balls and hoops.
Everyone in the Hall also had the opportunity to be inspired by the work of Professor Genville Hancox, director of music at Christ Church University, and his Monday Music singers. Fixers and visitors joined the choir in lusty renditions of traditional folk songs and the joy, evident to all, of making music together. With this, a seed was sown for one of the Trust’s programmes: developing a choir for dementia sufferers and their carers. We will keep you updated about this project as it evolves.
Above all, the theme of the day, according to both fixers and visitors, was how nice it was for strangers to be chatting and helping each other and that no one was selling anything. An added bonus was the informality, that people had the freedom to just talk, share ideas and information. We all made new connections, shared ideas and skills and met people we perhaps otherwise wouldn’t have.
‘Fixing’ also highlighted how everyone has equal amounts to offer regardless of age, ability, financial means or mobility. This is the essence of a Timebank. Establishing one is a Trust project.
Philippe Granger and colleagues from the Rushey Green Timebank who developed Bring and Fix, were on site fixing with us as well as answering questions about time banking.
Huge thanks to Rafa Lopez of The Goods Shed restaurant for donating his delicious Spanish tortilla to keep us going.
And, of course, thanks to the Hall we had the space to hold this event!
Given the community’s encouragement, Bring and Fix will be a regular Trust feature in the refurbished Westgate Hall.
All ready for Bring and Fix, 26 February 2012
February 22, 2012 at 2:07 pm | Posted in News | Comments OffThis Bring and Fix event proves (if proof was needed!) that Canterbury is full of people who want to play an active role in their community.
